Teena app for iOS and Android

A unique experience

Teena is a combination of a temperature measuring device and an app specially developed for teenagers. With a mix of fun, science and heart, it offers an accurate way to know when to expect your next period. The customized user experience shows the female cycle in a positive light and promotes knowledge about the processes in one's own body.

App design and identity

The visual identity and user experience of the app is tailored to Gen Z throughout. It is bold, loud, colorful and independent. Teena is the big sister that answers teenage girls’ questions and empowers them to experience their periods in a positive way.

All aspects of the app’s visual appearance, the content and the brand’s other touchpoints were developed in close collaboration with Onari Projects and illustrator Eveline Schram as part of an interdisciplinary approach. As a result, both the app and the brand as a whole benefit from a coherent and distinct visual language. The colors, illustrations and use of typography position Teena as a modern, bold brand with a laid-back, friendly character.

Temperature holds the key

During the night, the body temperature sinks to what is known as the basal body temperature (BBT): the lowest temperature attained by the body during sleep. The user is asked to measure this temperature each morning after waking up. By recording small changes in the basal body temperature throughout the month, Teena can track the user’s progress through the phases of the menstrual cycle and accurately predict the arrival of their next period.

To do this, the app connects to the thermometer via Bluetooth and synchronizes the measured temperatures with the backend. The backend then calculates the cycle phases and sends them back to the app, where the information is displayed to the user.

A treasure trove of knowledge

At the heart of Teena lies the in-app magazine, with informative articles that are easy and enjoyable to read. The articles demystifies the female anatomy as well as offering tips, tricks and useful information for dealing with periods, hormones and the female body. They are enriched with bold, simple illustrations aimed at portraying these important topics in a positive and accessible way.

The Cycle Journey – another key Teena feature – is an interactive and engaging representation of the menstrual cycle journey, allowing users to discover and explore the various phases at their own pace. A body map helps them map the anatomical information on the screen to their own body.

The Cycle Journey helps users to understand the processes taking place in their body.

Data protection has top priority

Utmost priority is given to the security of user data. Users are not required to provide any personal data (e.g. a name or email address) in order to use the app. The app account is managed under the serial number of the corresponding basal body thermometer. If a user loses their smartphone, they can restore the account via a recovery code.

Who’s behind it?

The company behind Teena is Valley Electronics, an international, research-based medical technology company with many years of experience in the development and distribution of fertility trackers and a pioneer in the femtech industry. Valley Electronics is based in Zurich. Its DaysyDay fertility tracking app was also designed and developed by Milk.
