Social Income

Social Income seeks to make the world a fairer place by addressing the vast chasm between rich and poor and facilitating direct, simple and effective redistribution. This redistribution helps people in need to initiate self-determined change and achieve a degree of financial independence.

The idea is simple: Just 1% of the income of a person living in an industrialized country can make a huge difference in a place like Sierra Leone, where the NGO operates. While this one percent is scarcely enough to be missed by the giver, it can have a huge impact on the recipient, who receives the money as a form of guaranteed basic income. The income payment corresponds to a local average wage and is paid out monthly for a period of three years.

We are supporting the work of Social Income by helping to refine its visual identity and managing the design of its new mobile app. The app is designed to facilitate the onboarding and management of basic income recipients. Our work for Social Income is carried out on a pro bono basis in the hopes of contributing to a fairer world.

The features

In Sierra Leone, mobile payments can be received via any cell phone number, regardless of whether the recipient has a smartphone or not. For users with smartphones, the app makes it easy to confirm the receipt of payment each month as well as enhancing communication with the NGO. Semi-annual surveys, delivered via the app, ask recipients to provide information on how their standard of living has changed over time. This facilitates the impact measurement of the program and provides important data on who can be helped most efficiently and where.

The app also makes it easy for users to change their phone number. This scenario comes into play more often than you might think, since phone numbers in Sierra Leone are not registered to specific individuals. If a cell phone is lost, the number is lost with it.
