Wiser eSetup by Feller

Commissioning smart electrical installations

Wiser eSetup is the app electricians use to commission a Wiser installation by Feller. In it, they assign lights, blinds, heating zones and sensors to rooms, configure and test them, and complete the installation before the residents gain access. Since 2025, we have been evolving the user experience and UI design of the app for iOS and Android and bringing new features into it.

Design while the app is in use

Wiser eSetup was already in use when Feller brought us on board in 2025 to improve usability and UI design and to integrate new features into the app. Since then, we have been evolving the design continuously, in weekly exchanges with Feller's project management and the app's development team. Feedback from electricians in the field feeds into this work, as do new requirements and Feller's own experience. Decisions are made together, as equals.

Wiser by Feller

Feller AG, based in Horgen, has been making switches, sockets and systems for electrical installations since 1909 and is part of Schneider Electric. Its connected building technology, Wiser, uses the same boxes and wires as a conventional installation, plus one communication wire, the K+. The app reaches the entire installation via the Wi-Fi device. Wiser thus closes the gap between conventional installations and KNX.

From building shell to connected home

After installation, switches, lights, blind motors and heating controllers already work in their basic functions. But no device knows which room it is in, and there are no scenes, heating zones or blind groups. Wiser eSetup turns this installation into a connected system. Loads are named and assigned to rooms, weather protection groups and heating zones are set up, and the end result is a tested, documented installation.

The work follows a fixed sequence, and the app shows it in the navigation at the bottom of the screen: setup, devices, scenes, sensors, completion. Completion is visible from the start, so users can jump there at any time and see what is still missing.

Wiser eSetup is a classic B2B app. It is aimed at trained electricians and speaks their language. Its counterpart for residents is the Wiser Home app, which they use to control their home.

“Find me”: the wall becomes the screen

Which device switches which lamp is not written down in any list. Other systems solve this with device numbers: someone notes during installation which device goes where and later transfers the list into software. Wiser eSetup uses the push-buttons on the wall as its input and output surface instead.

One tap on “Find me” and the button lights pulse blue throughout the home. Users walk through the rooms and press whatever lights up. Each pressed button appears in the app as a selected load, and at the end one button assigns them all to a room. The direction is reversed: instead of searching the room for the device on the screen, the button in the room appears on the screen.

The same method appears in several places, with a fixed colour code. Blue links buttons to loads, purple links scenes, and yellow covers setting up and checking the installation, from groups and room temperature sensors to the wiring check. The colour of the circles in the app is the same as the flashing colour on the wall. Taking over an existing installation is also confirmed at the wall: the Wi-Fi device opens takeover mode for thirty seconds, during which users press the button on the device. An installation therefore cannot be taken over remotely.

In “Find me” mode, all devices in the installation flash. Pressing a flashing button selects the device.

Creating an installation and checking the wiring

Commissioning starts with a linear flow: building type, installation name, address and room structure, with the usual rooms suggested. Users then connect their smartphone to the Wi-Fi device, which provides its own local network for this purpose, via QR code or manually. If no connection is established, the app guides them through the phone's settings in numbered steps, gives the device's network name and opens the system settings directly. If the signal is not strong enough in the building shell, a temporary network can be set up to extend the range.

The installation check comes before the actual assignment. The app makes the buttons of all devices flash: yellow if connected correctly, red if the signal is weak and not at all if there is no signal. Walking through the home, users see the fault where it is: at the box with the loose terminal.

During the wiring check, all installed and connected devices flash at the same time.

Loads, groups, scenes and heating zones

Each load has its own settings sheet, with options that depend on its type. For a dimmer, users set colour control, minimum and maximum brightness and dimming speed, and edit the dimming curve as a diagram, linear or logarithmic. They calibrate a blind motor by running it all the way down and all the way up once, followed by type, direction of travel, slat adjustment and travel time limit. The app explains every setting.

Groups define what is switched together, such as the living room light from the hallway or four blinds with one button. What is fixed by the wiring in a conventional installation can be programmed in the app here and reprogrammed later. Heating zones are also created in the app: heating valves on the heating controller are regulated together and assigned to a room temperature sensor. No cable connection is needed from each thermostat to the heating manifold.

Scenes store the state of several lamps and blinds and are then placed on a button on the wall, assigned via the button flashing purple. For the weather station, users combine blinds and awnings into weather protection groups, with four protective functions in a fixed order of priority: hail, wind, rain, frost. A simulation triggers each weather event in the app. This makes it possible to test the weather protection at handover without waiting for the weather.

Check, complete, document

Before completion, the app checks the installation and lists the open items, grouped by type. Each item states what is missing, why and what needs to be done. One tap leads directly to where it can be fixed. As long as items are open, the installation cannot be completed.

Abschliessen
In the completion tab, the installation is checked, errors are fixed and the installation is completed.

Finally, the app creates a backup of the installation in the cloud and generates the installation documentation as a PDF: a cover page, an overview of the rooms and functions with the same symbols as in the app, the weather protection groups and a page for notes. A separate documentation step is no longer needed. The names given during commissioning later also appear in the residents' Wiser Home app, so the app suggests meaningful names and explains why: they help the customer find their way around their Wiser Home app.

User experience for the construction site

Users operate the app standing up, on a ladder, with one hand, often wearing gloves and in poor light. Feedback from the field made it clear that the interface of the previous version was too small. In the redesign, we therefore made the controls large: full-width buttons, tall list rows, large type.

On a construction site, things are rarely finished. Data entry can be paused and saved for later, and unconnected channels are marked as unused so that the installation can still be completed despite gaps. Where the convenient route may fail, there is a second one alongside it: location or manual address, QR code or manual connection, network list or hidden network. Rooms are created from a grid of twenty-one room types, each with its own symbol, and names can be entered freely or chosen from suggestions.

The user experience is designed for electricians who only commission a few Wiser installations a year and therefore have no routine. The navigation sets the order, the check explains every open item in plain language, and where the software cannot help, the app guides users to the hardware with photos, right down to the size of the screwdriver.

We know apps for the electrical trade from our work with Sonepar and Siresca: from digital wholesale to augmented reality on the construction site.

Connected locally, on any smartphone

In 2026, Wiser eSetup was redeveloped in Flutter, with a shared codebase for iOS and Android. Construction sites have no standard device fleet, and an installation is often started on one smartphone and continued on another. The app connects to exactly one device, the Wi-Fi device, and reaches all the others via the K+, without pairing each device. Because there is often neither a home network nor mobile reception in a building shell, commissioning runs locally via its access point. Backup, firmware updates and support are added via the cloud afterwards.

Anyone taking over an installation confirms this by pressing a button on the Wi-Fi device on site.
